A Historical Event in Seadrift (1979)
Seadrift is known for an event that happened on August 3, 1979. Before this date, there had been some disagreements between local residents and Vietnamese refugees. Many local people worked in the fishing industry. They felt worried because more Vietnamese people were also fishing, which created more competition.
On the night of August 3, 1979, a conflict took place between a local crabber and a Vietnamese crabber. This conflict led to the death of the local crabber. Soon after, several Vietnamese fishing boats were burned. There was also an attempt to bomb a crab processing plant that employed Vietnamese workers.
This event inspired several films and documentaries:
- The 1981 documentary Fire on the Water
- The 1985 film Alamo Bay
- An independent documentary called Seadrift, which premiered in 2019.
- The 2020 film "Seadrift" from the "Reel South" documentary series also looked at the 1979 incident.
