Seaview Chain Pier facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Seaview Chain Pier was a special pier built in 1881 near Ryde on the Isle of Wight. It was designed by Frank Caws and took a few years to build, opening fully in 1882. This pier was very long, about 305 meters (1,000 feet), and 4.5 meters (15 feet) wide.

Building and Changes

The pier was first built between September 1879 and 1881. In 1889, it was made even longer, reaching about 320 meters (1,050 feet). This was done to make the landing area better for boats.

However, not as many people used the pier as hoped. To try and attract more visitors, the pier head was made bigger in 1901, and fun activities were added. A company called the Seaview steam packet company even started a boat service between Seaview Chain Pier and South Parade Pier to bring more people.

Later Years and Demolition

The pier was closed during World War 1, starting in 1915. Later, during World War 2, the Royal Navy took control of it.

In 1948, the pier was recognized as an important historic structure, meaning it was "listed". But sadly, big storms caused a lot of damage to the old pier. Because of this damage, it had to be taken down in 1952. The Seaview Chain Pier was quite rare, as it was one of only three chain piers ever built in the British Isles.
