Sebastián Garcilaso de la Vega y Vargas (born in Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain, in 1507 – died in Cusco, Peru, in 1559) was a Spanish conquistador and an important official in the new Spanish colonies. He was the father of a famous writer named Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. His son's mother was an Inca princess named Isabel Chimpu Occlo.

Early Life and Adventures

Sebastián Garcilaso was the third son of Alonso de Hinestrosa de Vargas and Blanca de Sotomayor. He was a soldier who explored and helped conquer new lands for Spain. He worked with Pedro de Alvarado and took part in the conquests led by Hernán Cortés. First, he was in Mexico, and later he went to Guatemala.

In 1534, he decided to travel to Peru. He arrived in Venezuela and then marched to Quito. After that, he joined the army of Francisco Pizarro, who was a very famous Spanish conquistador.

Exploring and Fighting in Peru

Sebastián Garcilaso was given orders to explore and conquer the Cauca River valley. However, he stopped trying to settle the San Mateo Bay area. He returned to Lima with his eighty men. There, he met Manco Inca Yupanqui, an important Inca leader.

He also joined an expedition to a place called Collao. He went with Gonzalo Pizarro and Pedro de Oñate. In a battle at Cochabamba, they defeated a leader named Tiso Yupanqui.

Becoming a Corregidor

On November 17, 1554, Sebastián Garcilaso was given an important job. The Royal Audiencia of Lima, which was like a high court and government body, made him the corregidor of Cuzco. A corregidor was a local governor, in charge of a city or region. This meant he was a key official in the city of Cuzco.
