The second government of Mariano Rajoy was formed on 4 November 2016. This happened after he was chosen as Prime Minister of Spain by the Congress of Deputies. His political party, the People's Party (PP), won the most votes in the 2016 Spanish general election.

This government followed Rajoy's first government. It was the official Government of Spain from November 4, 2016, until June 7, 2018. The cabinet included members from the PP and some independent politicians. It ended on June 1, 2018, when a special vote of no confidence against Rajoy succeeded. The government continued to work in a temporary role until Pedro Sánchez's new government took over.

How the Government Was Formed

To become Prime Minister, a candidate needs enough votes from the Congress of Deputies. This process is called an investiture vote. Mariano Rajoy needed to win this vote to form his second government.

The Investiture Vote for Mariano Rajoy

The vote happened in two stages. The first vote was on October 27, 2016. Rajoy needed 176 votes out of 350 to win. He did not get enough votes in this first round.

The second vote took place on October 29, 2016. For this vote, he only needed a simple majority, meaning more "Yes" votes than "No" votes. He received 170 "Yes" votes. Many members of the PSOE chose to abstain (not vote "Yes" or "No"). This allowed Rajoy to win the vote and form his government.
