The Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, often called the Brexit Secretary, was an important government job in the United Kingdom. This person was in charge of the Department for Exiting the European Union. Their main task was to manage the UK's departure from the European Union (EU), which was known as "Brexit".
This role was created on 13 July 2016, when Theresa May became Prime Minister. The Secretary oversaw the talks about Brexit after people in the UK voted to leave the EU in a referendum in 2016. The person holding this job was also a member of the Cabinet, which is a group of the most important ministers in the government.
The job of Brexit Secretary ended on 31 January 2020. This happened when the United Kingdom officially left the European Union during the time Boris Johnson was Prime Minister. After this, a new government role called Minister of State for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency was created.

History of the Brexit Secretary Role
Setting Up the Department
When the role was created, a new government department was needed to support the Secretary. This department was called the Department for Exiting the European Union. It was first thought that the department might use a building that used to belong to another government office. Later, the department moved into 9 Downing Street in London.
First Brexit Secretary
The very first person to hold the job of Brexit Secretary was David Davis. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) who had long believed the UK should leave the EU. He had campaigned for the UK to leave.
Davis resigned from the role on 8 July 2018. After him, Dominic Raab took over on 9 July 2018. Raab then resigned on 15 November 2018. The last person to be Brexit Secretary was Steve Barclay, who started on 16 November 2018.
