The Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, often called the Brexit Secretary, was an important government job in the Government of the United Kingdom. This person was in charge of the Department for Exiting the European Union. Their main task was to manage the UK's departure from the European Union (EU), which was known as "Brexit".
This role was created on 13 July 2016, when Theresa May became Prime Minister. It was set up after a vote in 2016 where most people chose for the UK to leave the EU. The Secretary of State led the talks about Brexit. This position was ended on 31 January 2020, when the UK officially left the European Union.

The Brexit Secretary's Role
The Brexit Secretary was a Secretary of State, which is a senior minister in the UK government. They were also a member of the Cabinet, a group of top ministers who make important decisions.
This role was created to handle the complex process of leaving the European Union. This included leading negotiations with the EU and making sure the UK's laws were ready for the change.
History of the Role
The position of Brexit Secretary was new and created specifically for the UK's departure from the EU. When Theresa May became Prime Minister, she quickly set up a new government department. This department was called the Department for Exiting the European Union. Its job was to manage all the details of leaving the EU.
The first person to hold this important job was David Davis. He had long believed that the UK should leave the EU. He had also served in government before, as a minister for Europe.
The department's main office was at 9 Downing Street in Westminster, London. This is very close to the Prime Minister's official home.
David Davis resigned from the role on 8 July 2018. After him, Dominic Raab took over but also resigned a few months later. The last person to be Brexit Secretary was Steve Barclay. The job was officially ended on 31 January 2020, the day the UK left the EU.
