Seelitz is an abandoned village located in Perry County, Missouri, in the United States. It was once a small community that no longer exists today.
Where Did the Name Seelitz Come From?
The village of Seelitz was named after a place called Seelitz in Saxony, Germany. Many early settlers in this area came from Germany.
The Story of Seelitz
Seelitz was a town that didn't last very long. It was founded in 1839 near Altenburg. Seelitz was one of seven new settlements created during a special event. This event was called the Saxon Migration. During this time, many people from Saxony, Germany, moved to Missouri.
A Lutheran pastor named Ernst Moritz Bürger led the people who settled Seelitz. Most of these settlers were from his church group in Germany. Pastor Bürger might have chosen the name Seelitz to honor his first church job.
The village of Seelitz was located near Frohna. It was in a low-lying area near Brazeau Creek. This low location caused problems for the settlers. The area was unhealthy, and people often got sick with fevers.
By 1841, many people had left Seelitz. Pastor Bürger's church group had shrunk to only five members. He eventually resigned, and the Seelitz church joined the one in Altenburg. After this, the name Seelitz disappeared from maps. It's not clear if its land became part of Altenburg or Frohna. Some think it might have changed its name to Brazeau, a nearby community that still exists today.
