History of Altenburg
Altenburg means "Old Castle" in German. This city was started in 1839 by a group of Lutheran settlers. They named it after the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, a place in their home country. However, most of the settlers actually came from other parts of Saxony, Germany.
German Settlers and Their New Home
Altenburg is one of seven towns in the area founded by German Lutheran immigrants in 1839. These towns include Dresden, Frohna, Johannisberg, Paitzdorf, Seelitz, and Wittenberg. The settlers named all these places after towns in their native Saxony region. These communities played a big part in forming the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.
Early Buildings and Education
Soon after arriving, the immigrants built Trinity Lutheran Church in 1839. It started as a log cabin church, then became a limestone building, and later a frame church. They also built a school called the "Log Cabin College". This school was special because it allowed both boys and girls to learn together, which was very rare at that time.
Lutheran Heritage Center and Museum
Today, Altenburg is home to the Lutheran Heritage Center and Museum. It was opened in 1985. Visitors can explore old buildings from the mid-1800s. The museum also has an exhibition hall, a reading room, and a research library. It's a great place to learn about the history of the settlers.
Geography
Altenburg covers a total area of about 1.05 square miles (2.72 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
