Seitz Lake is a beautiful, clear lake high up in the mountains of Nevada. It's a special type of lake called a glacial tarn. This means it was formed by a giant glacier, like a huge ice shovel, digging out a bowl in the rock long, long ago. The lake is located in the Ruby Mountains, which are in Elko County in the northeastern part of Nevada.
About Seitz Lake
Seitz Lake is found near the top of Seitz Canyon. It sits at a high elevation of about 8,915 feet (2,715 meters) above sea level. The lake covers an area of about 17 acres (6.9 hectares). At its deepest point, Seitz Lake is about 20 feet (6 meters) deep.
Water Flow
Seitz Lake is a very important source of water for Rabbit Creek. This creek used to be known as Seitz Creek. After leaving the mountains, Rabbit Creek flows near the community of Spring Creek. It then winds its way through the Lamoille Valley. Finally, Rabbit Creek joins the main part of the Humboldt River. This meeting point is between the towns of Halleck and Elburz, Nevada.
How It Got Its Name
The lake was named after two brothers, George and Edward Seitz. They were early ranchers who lived in Pleasant Valley. George Seitz eventually moved away from the area. However, his brother, Ed Seitz, became an important person in the community. He was elected as the sheriff of Elko County in 1869.
