Self-replication facts for kids
Replication is a fancy word for making a copy. When something makes a copy of itself, it's called self-replication. This amazing process happens all around us, from tiny living cells to computer programs and even ideas!

How Living Things Replicate
Living things, like plants, animals, and even tiny bacteria, are made of cells. Cells are the basic building blocks of life. When cells are in the right environment, they can make copies of themselves through a process called cell division.
Cell Division and DNA
During cell division, a cell carefully copies all its important parts. One of the most important things it copies is its DNA. DNA is like a blueprint that contains all the instructions for building and operating a cell.
Once the DNA is copied, the cell divides into two new cells. Each new cell gets a complete set of DNA. This is how living things grow and how parents pass on their traits to their children. This process is a perfect example of self-replication in nature.
How Viruses Replicate
Viruses are tiny particles, much smaller than cells. They are not considered truly "alive" because they can't reproduce on their own. Instead, they are like tiny invaders!
Taking Over Cells
To make copies, viruses have to take over the machinery of a living cell. They infect a cell and use its resources to make more viruses.
- RNA viruses like the flu virus, use a cell's parts to copy their own RNA (which is similar to DNA) and make their protein coats.
- Retroviruses are a special type of RNA virus. They have a trick: they turn their RNA into DNA inside the host cell. Then, this new viral DNA gets mixed into the cell's own DNA, making the cell a virus-making factory!
How Other Things Replicate
Replication isn't just for living things. It can happen in other ways too!
Computer Viruses
Just like biological viruses, computer viruses are programs that can make copies of themselves. They do this by using the hardware and software already on your computer. They can spread from one computer to another, often without you even knowing it!
Memes
A meme is an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture. Think of a popular dance move, a funny internet picture, or a catchy phrase. Memes replicate by spreading from one human mind to another, using our culture as their way to reproduce.
