Sentinel Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in Yosemite Valley. This valley is part of Yosemite National Park in California, United States. The waterfall flows down the side of a large rock formation called Sentinel Rock.
Sentinel Falls is known as a tiered waterfall. This means it has several distinct sections or "steps" where the water drops. It is made up of 6 main drops.
How Tall is Sentinel Falls?
The total height of Sentinel Falls is very impressive. It drops about 1,920 feet (590 m) (585 meters) from top to bottom. To give you an idea, that's almost as tall as two Eiffel Towers stacked on top of each other!
The longest single drop within the falls is about 500 feet (150 m) (152 meters). This makes it one of the tallest waterfalls in the world.
World Ranking of Waterfalls
Sentinel Falls is often listed among the world's highest waterfalls. Some lists might say it's the twelfth-highest. However, it is actually closer to the sixtieth-tallest. Many smaller waterfalls are not usually included in these top lists.
Why Does Sentinel Falls Dry Up?
Even though it's very tall, Sentinel Falls doesn't always have water flowing. It gets its water from a relatively small area. This means it doesn't collect a lot of rain or melted snow.
Because of this, the waterfall usually dries up by July each year. It flows strongest in spring when snow is melting in the mountains.
