Sentinel Rock is a huge rock made of granite in Yosemite National Park, California, United States. It stands tall over Yosemite Valley, right across from Yosemite Falls. Sentinel Rock is about 0.7 miles (1.1 km) northwest of Sentinel Dome.
How Sentinel Rock Was Formed
Sentinel Rock was created when large pieces of rock broke away from the south side of Yosemite Valley's cliff. This happened along cracks in the rock that went almost east to west. This process formed the very steep, straight-up north face of Sentinel Rock.
Climbing Sentinel Rock
Many climbers enjoy the challenge of Sentinel Rock. The most well-known climbing path is called the Steck-Salathé route. This route is rated as a class 5.10b G A0 climb, which means it is quite difficult.
