The dinar is the official currency of Serbia. A currency is the type of money used in a country. The dinar is used for buying and selling things every day in Serbia. People use it for everything from food to clothes.

What is the Serbian Dinar?

The Serbian dinar is the money used in Serbia. Its official code is RSD. Like many currencies, it has smaller parts. One dinar is made up of 100 para. However, para coins are not used much anymore.

Coins and Banknotes

The dinar comes in both coins and paper money (banknotes).

  • Coins: You will often see coins for 1, 2, 5, and 20 dinars. There are also 10-dinar coins, but they are not as common.
  • Banknotes: The paper money comes in many values. Common banknotes are 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 dinars. There is also a 5000-dinar banknote, but it is rarely used.

Who Makes the Dinar?

The National Bank of Serbia is in charge of the dinar. They decide how much money is made. They also make sure the money is safe and stable. The actual banknotes and coins are printed and minted by a special institute in Topčider.

History of the Dinar

The use of the dinar in Serbia goes back a very long time. The first time the word "dinar" was used for money in Serbia was in 1214. This was during the time of the Kingdom of Serbia.

Old Serbian Dinars

For centuries, different Serbian rulers issued their own dinar coins. These coins often had images of kings, queens, and religious symbols. They were made of silver and were very important for trade.

Modern Dinar

After many changes over the years, the modern Serbian dinar was reintroduced. This happened in 2003. It replaced the Yugoslav dinar, which was used before. This change helped Serbia have its own clear currency.
