Serey Dié's Football Journey
Early Career Steps
Serey Dié was born in Facobly, Ivory Coast. He began his football journey at the Centre National des Sports de Haut Niveau in Abidjan. After playing for Volcan Junior and CO Korhogo, he joined the top team Stade d'Abidjan in 2003. Three years later, he moved to EO Goulette et Kram in Tunisia. However, he left this club after only six months.
Playing for ES Sétif
Serey Dié then went to Algeria for a trial with ES Sétif. At first, the club's president thought he was the wrong player! But the coach asked Serey Dié to stay for training. He played well in a test match and convinced the club to give him a six-month trial. During this time, Serey Dié played very well. ES Sétif even won the 2007–08 Arab Champions League. However, he decided not to sign a full contract with them.
Time with FC Sion
From 2008 to 2012, Serey Dié played for Sion in Switzerland. He helped the team win the Swiss Cup twice during this period. In May 2012, he was involved in an incident with a ball-boy during a game against FC Lausanne-Sport. This led to him being suspended for eight matches.
Joining FC Basel
On 13 December 2012, Basel announced that Serey Dié would join their team. He signed a contract for three and a half years. He started playing for Basel in February 2013. His first game was a 3–0 win against his old club, Sion. He scored his first goal for Basel in April 2013, helping them win 4–0 against Luzern.
Winning Championships with Basel
At the end of the 2012–13 season, Serey Dié and Basel won the Swiss Championship title. They also reached the final of the 2012–13 Swiss Cup, but lost in a penalty shootout. In the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League, Basel made it to the semi-finals. They played against Chelsea, who won both games.
Serey Dié won the league championship again with Basel at the end of the 2013–14 season. They also reached the final of the 2013–14 Swiss Cup, but lost to Zürich. Basel played in the Champions League and reached the group stage. They then moved to the Europa League knockout phase and made it to the quarter-finals. They were eventually beaten by Valencia.
Moving to VfB Stuttgart
The 2014–15 season was successful for Basel, as they won the championship for the sixth time in a row. However, Serey Dié did not play as much under the new coach. Because of this, he decided to leave the club. On 2 February 2015, he moved to Stuttgart in Germany.
Playing for VfB Stuttgart
After joining Stuttgart, Serey Dié became a very important player in their midfield. He played in almost all of Stuttgart's remaining games that season. On 15 July 2016, Stuttgart announced that Serey Dié would return to Basel.
Return to Basel
Serey Dié signed a two-year contract to return to Basel. He joined the team for their 2016–17 season. At the end of this season, Serey Dié won the Swiss championship for the fourth time in his career. This was Basel's eighth championship title in a row! They also won the 2016–17 Swiss Cup, beating Sion 3–0 in the final. This meant they had won both the league and the cup, which is called "the double."
Loan to Neuchâtel Xamax
In the 2017–18 season, Serey Dié was loaned out to Xamax. He wanted to play more regularly to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast. After his loan period and playing in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Serey Dié and Basel decided to end his contract. He played a total of 168 games for Basel across his two periods with the club, scoring six goals.
Later Career Clubs
After leaving Basel, Serey Dié had short periods playing for Aarau and then again for Xamax.
Final Return to Sion
On 26 May 2020, it was confirmed that Serey Dié had returned to FC Sion. This was the club where he first started his European football career. He signed a two-year deal. Serey Dié ended his active football career during the 2021–22 Super League season.
International Career for Ivory Coast
Serey Dié proudly represented his home country, Ivory Coast, in international football. He played for the Ivory Coast 61 times between 2013 and 2022, scoring 2 goals.
Emotional Moment at the World Cup
At the 2014 FIFA World Cup, during Ivory Coast's match against Colombia, Serey Dié was seen crying during the national anthem. Many people thought he was crying because his father had passed away. However, Serey Dié later explained that while he did think about his father (who died in 2004), his tears came from the strong emotions and excitement he felt while playing for his country.
Coaching Career
After he stopped playing football, Serey Dié began a new chapter in his career. In September 2022, he was hired as a youth coach at FC Bramois. This means he now helps train and guide young football players.
