Chess Career
Sergei Rublevsky was born in the city of Kurgan, Russia. He quickly became a very strong chess player.
Major Victories
Rublevsky has had many successes in his career. He helped the Russian team win four gold medals at the Chess Olympiads, which is like the Olympics for chess. He also won an individual bronze medal for his performance.
In 2004, he won the Aeroflot Open, a very difficult and important tournament. A year later, in 2005, he became the Russian Chess Champion. He won the championship by a full point, which was a big achievement.
Playing for the World Championship
His strong performance in 2005 allowed him to play in the Candidates Tournament in 2007. This tournament decides who gets to challenge the World Champion.
In the first round, he beat Ruslan Ponomariov, a former world champion. In the second round, he faced Alexander Grischuk. Their match was very close and ended in a tie. To decide the winner, they played a series of fast games called a "rapid playoff." Grischuk won the playoff, so Rublevsky was eliminated from the tournament.
Today, Rublevsky spends more time coaching than playing. He helps train other top chess players, both adults and young talents.
Playing Style
Rublevsky is known for his smart and practical playing style. Another Grandmaster, Nigel Short, described him as a "canny" player who uses his experience to outsmart his opponents. Instead of memorizing every new opening move, he often chooses less common paths where his deep understanding of chess gives him an advantage.
Grandmaster Alexander Morozevich once said that his own unique opening moves were not any stranger than Rublevsky's, showing that Rublevsky is known for his creative style.
Favorite Openings
In chess, an "opening" is the first few moves of a game. Rublevsky has his favorite ways to start.
- When playing with the White pieces, he almost always starts with the move 1.e4 (moving the king's pawn forward two squares). If his opponent plays the Sicilian Defence, a popular response, Rublevsky has special ways to play against it.
- When playing with the Black pieces, he often uses variations of the Sicilian Defence himself. Against the move 1.d4, he usually plays the Queen's Gambit Accepted.
