About Sergey Dorenko
His Early Life and Career
Sergey Dorenko was born on October 18, 1959. In 1982, he finished his studies at the People's Friendship University of Russia in Moscow. After graduating, he worked as a translator, helping people speak between Portuguese and Russian in Angola.
In 1984, he joined the military, but he left in 1985 due to some health issues.
Working in Television
In April 1985, Dorenko started working for Gosteleradio. This was the main television and radio company in the Soviet Union at that time.
From 1996 to 1999, he hosted a news program called Vremya on ORT. This show talked about current events and news.
In September 1999, Dorenko started his own weekly show, Sergey Dorenko Show. It aired on Saturdays. Later that year, he became a Deputy Director General at ORT. During this time, he often spoke critically about some politicians, like the Mayor of Moscow, Yury Luzhkov, and Yevgeny Primakov. He also criticized their political party.
In August 2000, Dorenko's program talked about how the government handled the accident of the Kursk submarine. Soon after, his show was taken off the air. Dorenko believed this happened because of pressure from the government. He said that the president wanted him to join his team, but Dorenko wanted to work for the viewers instead.
The director of ORT, Konstantin Ernst, said that the government was not involved. He explained that he canceled the show because Dorenko kept talking about a plan to take over part of the TV network. After this, Dorenko became a strong critic of the government and stopped working for Russian television.
Moving to Radio
After leaving television, Sergey Dorenko started hosting radio programs. He worked for Echo of Moscow radio.
In 2003, he joined the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. Two years later, Dorenko wrote a book called 2008. It was a story about a future revolution in Russia.
From 2008 to 2013, he was the main editor for the Russian News Service radio station. Since 2014, Dorenko was the founder and chief editor of the Govorit Moskva radio station.
His Health and Passing
On May 9, 2019, Sergey Dorenko was riding his Triumph Bonneville motorcycle in Moscow. He suddenly started to swerve into traffic. Reports said he had a heart problem, known as a cardiac event. Dorenko managed to avoid hitting other cars, but he hit a concrete barrier.
He was taken to the hospital, where doctors tried to save him for over an hour. However, he never woke up and was pronounced dead. Later, doctors found that the cause of his death was an aortic rupture, which is a serious problem with a main blood vessel. It was reported that Dorenko knew about this health issue since 2016.
