Sergio Canales Madrazo (born February 16, 1991) is a Spanish professional footballer. He plays as an attacking midfielder for Liga MX club Monterrey.

Sergio started his career at Racing de Santander. At 19, he joined famous club Real Madrid. However, he did not play much there and left after one season. He then played for other Spanish teams like Valencia, Real Sociedad, and Betis. He played over 380 games in La Liga, scoring 49 goals. He also won the Copa del Rey twice.

Canales played for various Spanish youth teams. He won the European Championship with the Under-21 team in 2013. He made his debut for the senior national team in 2019.

Club Career Highlights

Starting at Racing Santander

Sergio Canales was born in Santander, Cantabria. He grew up playing in the youth system of his hometown club, Racing de Santander.

He made his first team debut on September 18, 2008. This was in a UEFA Cup match against FC Honka. A few weeks later, he played his first game in La Liga, Spain's top league.

Canales started getting more playing time. In December 2009, he scored two goals against RCD Espanyol. He did this again in January 2010 against Sevilla FC. He finished his first full season with six goals and four assists. This helped his team avoid being moved to a lower league.

Moving to Real Madrid

On February 12, 2010, Real Madrid signed Canales. He joined them on a six-year deal. He made his debut for Real Madrid in a friendly game on August 4, scoring a goal.

His first league game for Real Madrid was on August 29, 2010. He played 518 minutes in his only season with the club. He also played in three games when Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey in 2011.

Time at Valencia

On August 4, 2011, Canales joined Valencia on a two-year loan. He scored his first goal for Valencia on October 1.

Later that month, he got a serious knee injury. This kept him out of the game for six months. In April 2012, he got injured again shortly after returning. This meant he missed another six months of playing.

On July 19, 2012, Canales officially moved to Valencia permanently. He signed a five-year contract with the club.

Playing for Real Sociedad

In January 2014, Canales moved to Real Sociedad. He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract.

In his first full season, he scored four goals in 36 games. However, in December 2015, he suffered another serious knee injury. This time it was in his left leg.

On May 24, 2018, Real Sociedad announced that Canales would leave the club.

Joining Real Betis

On July 3, 2018, Canales signed a four-year contract with Real Betis. He joined them as a free agent.

In the 2020–21 season, he scored eight goals. This was his best goal-scoring season so far in his career.

Playing in Mexico with Monterrey

In July 2023, Canales moved to play outside of Spain for the first time. The 32-year-old signed a three-year deal with Liga MX club C.F. Monterrey in Mexico.

On September 3, he scored two goals in a 2–1 away win. This was against C.D. Guadalajara.

International Career

Youth Teams

In 2008, Canales helped Spain's Under-17 team win the UEFA European Championship in Turkey.

At 19, he played his first game for the Under-21 team. He scored twice in his first two games.

He also played in the European Under-19 Championship in 2009. The next year, he reached the final of the European Under-19 Championships. He scored one goal in the semi-finals against England.

Canales was part of the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup squad in Colombia. He played four games as Spain reached the quarter-finals. He also helped the Under-21 team qualify for the 2013 European Championship. Spain went on to win the trophy that year.

Senior National Team

On March 15, 2019, Canales was called up to the senior national team. He was selected for two UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying matches.

He made his debut eight days later, on March 23, 2019. He came on as a substitute in a 2–1 win against Norway.

Canales scored his first goal for Spain on November 11, 2020. It was the opening goal in a 1–1 friendly draw against the Netherlands.

Sergio Canales has a second cousin named Borja Docal. Borja Docal is also a footballer.
