Sergio Canales Madrazo, born on February 16, 1991, is a talented Spanish football player. He plays as an attacking midfielder for the club Monterrey in Mexico's Liga MX.
Canales started his career at Racing de Santander. At 19, he joined Real Madrid. After one season, he moved on. He played for Valencia, Real Sociedad, and Betis in La Liga, Spain's top league. He played 384 games and scored 49 goals over 15 seasons. He also won the Copa del Rey twice, once with Real Madrid and once with Betis.
He played 39 games for Spain's youth teams. He helped the under-21 team win the European Championship in 2013. Canales made his debut for the senior national team in 2019.

Club Career Highlights
Starting at Racing Santander
Sergio Canales was born in Santander, Cantabria. He grew up playing football in the youth teams of his hometown club, Racing de Santander.
He played his first game for the main team on September 18, 2008. This was a UEFA Cup match against FC Honka from Finland. About two weeks later, he played his first game in La Liga.
Canales started getting more time on the field. He scored two goals against RCD Espanyol in a 4–0 win on December 6, 2009. He did it again against Sevilla FC on January 9, 2010, in a 2–1 win. He was named the best player in that game. He finished his first full season with six goals and four assists. This helped his team stay in the top league.
Time at Real Madrid
On February 12, 2010, Real Madrid announced they had signed Canales. He joined them on a six-year deal. He played his first game for Real Madrid on August 4, scoring a goal in a friendly match. His first league game was on August 29, 2010.
Canales played 518 minutes in his only year with Real Madrid. He also played in three games when the team won the Copa del Rey in the 2010–11 season.
Playing for Valencia
On August 4, 2011, Canales joined Valencia on a two-year loan. This meant he played for Valencia but still belonged to Real Madrid. Valencia had the option to buy him later.
He scored his first goal for Valencia on October 1, 2011. It was the only goal in a home game against Granada CF. Later that month, he got a serious knee injury during a game. This kept him from playing for six months.
On April 26, 2012, Canales got injured again in the same knee. This happened in a Europa League semi-final game. He missed another six months of playing.
On July 19, 2012, Canales officially moved to Valencia for five years.
Moving to Real Sociedad
In January 2014, Canales signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Real Sociedad. This was another top-division team.
He scored four goals in 36 games in his first full season with Real Sociedad. On December 30, 2015, he suffered another serious knee injury, this time in his left leg.
Canales left Real Sociedad on June 30, 2018.
Joining Real Betis
On July 3, 2018, Canales signed a four-year contract with Real Betis. In the 2020–21 season, he scored eight goals, which was his best record so far.
Playing in Mexico for Monterrey
In July 2023, Canales moved to Mexico to play for Liga MX club C.F. Monterrey. He signed a three-year deal. On September 3, he scored two goals in a 2–1 away win against C.D. Guadalajara. He continues to play for Monterrey as of July 2025.
International Career
Youth National Teams
In 2008, Canales helped Spain's under-17 team win the UEFA European Championship in Turkey.
At 19, he played his first game for the under-21 team. He scored two goals in his first two games.
Canales also played in the European Under-19 Championship in 2009. The next year, he reached the final of the European Championships in the same age group. He scored one goal in the semi-finals against England.
He was part of the national team for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia. He played four out of five games. He also played regularly in the qualifying games for the 2013 European Under-21 Championship, scoring three goals. Spain went on to win the trophy in 2013.
Senior National Team
On March 15, 2019, Canales was called up to the senior national team by coach Luis Enrique. He made his debut eight days later, coming on as a substitute in a 2–1 win against Norway.
Canales scored his first goal for Spain on November 11, 2020. It was the opening goal in a 1–1 friendly draw against the Netherlands.
