Asclepias solanoana is a special kind of plant called a milkweed. People also call it serpentine milkweed, prostrate milkweed, or solanoa. It's quite rare! This plant only grows in California, specifically in the northern part of the California Coast Ranges, which is north of the San Francisco Bay Area.
What Does It Look Like?
This milkweed is a strong plant that lives for many years. It has smooth, purple stems that spread out along the ground instead of growing straight up.
Its leaves are thick and grow in pairs, one on each side of the stem. Each leaf is shaped like an oval or a heart and sits on a short stem called a petiole.
The flowers grow in a large, round bunch. Each flower has a center part with rounded, cup-like shapes that can be pink or brown. The petals of the flower either bend back towards the stem or spread outwards.
