The Serra de Na Burguesa is a mountain range on the island of Majorca. This island is part of the Balearic Islands, which belong to Spain. The name "Serra de Na Burguesa" means "Port of Pine Mountain."

This mountain range is the most southern part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. It ends at the Bay of Palma in the Mediterranean Sea. You can find Na Burguesa about halfway between the towns of Santa Ponsa and Palma. The town of Calvià is located between Na Burguesa and the main Serra de Tramuntana range.

The Serra de Na Burguesa was once known as Serra de Portopí. This older name is important in history. In 1229, King James II of Aragon led his soldiers across these mountains. They were able to take Palma back for Spain from the Moors, who had been living there.

Today, Portopí is a neighborhood in Palma de Mallorca. The name Serra de Na Burguesa came later. It honors Francesc Burgués, who was a lawyer for the Spanish King. In the early 1500s, he owned a farm called Bendinat at the base of the mountain. Bendinat is now a living area in Calvià.

Exploring the Geography of the Mountains

The mountains in Serra de Na Burguesa are generally about 400 meters (1,312 feet) above sea level. They have low hills and valleys with steep sides. The two highest points are Puig den Bou, which is 503 meters (1,650 feet) high, and Puig Gros de Bendinat, at 486 meters (1,594 feet).

After some fires on Na Burguesa, a fire tower was built on Es Pi de ses Creus, a peak that is 432 meters (1,417 feet) high. Now, there are paths for fire trucks all along the top of the mountains. Many cave systems have been found here, and important old objects have been discovered inside them.

Mirador de n'Alzamora is a natural viewing spot on Na Burguesa. Long ago, until the early 1900s, shepherds would bring their animals to graze in the central highlands called Coll dels Pastors, which is 443 meters (1,453 feet) high. Scientists have also found high levels of salt in some of the underground water sources, called aquifers, in these mountains.

Plants and Animals of Na Burguesa

The Serra de Na Burguesa is home to many pine trees. It also has a lot of Mediterranean maquis, which are thick bushes. You can also find oak trees, strawberry trees, roses, wild gladiola flowers, and other flowering shrubs.

The mountains are also home to various animals. You might see lizards, many types of butterflies, and different kinds of insects living here.
