Seseña is a town in Spain. It is located in the province of Toledo, which is part of the Castilla–La Mancha region. Seseña is also part of an area called La Sagra. As of January 1, 2020, about 27,066 people live there.
Seseña became well-known because of some big building projects. These projects were in areas called Vallegrande and El Quiñón. Today, Seseña is made up of four main parts. These parts are quite far from each other. They do not have walking paths connecting them, which is different from most Spanish towns.

Exploring Seseña's Location
Seseña covers a total area of about 71.41 square kilometers. To the north, it shares a border with the Madrid region.
Seseña's Highest and Lowest Points
The northern part of Seseña is the highest area in the town. It is about 684 meters (2,244 feet) above sea level. The southern part of Seseña is lower. It is close to the Jarama and Tagus rivers and is about 500 meters (1,640 feet) above sea level.
Seseña's Past: Key Events
Seseña has a rich history, including a notable battle and a more recent event involving a large fire.
The Battle of Seseña (1936)
In October 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, a battle took place in Seseña. This was an attack by the Republican forces on the area held by the Nationalist side. This battle was important because it was one of the first times that tanks were used in the Spanish Civil War.
The Seseña Tire Fire (2016)
In May 2016, a large fire started at a tire dump in Seseña. This fire created a cloud of smoke that could be harmful. Because of this, about 9,000 people living in Seseña were asked to leave their homes for safety.
The Francisco Hernando Development
The Residencial Francisco Hernando is a large housing area in Seseña. It was built in the El Quiñón part of town by a company called Onde 2000. This company belonged to a person named Francisco Hernando.
Building a New Town
Construction on this project began in the 2000s. Seseña was a good place for this development because it was close enough for people to travel to and from Madrid for work. The original plan was to build 13,500 homes. This would have cost more than 9 billion euros! It was planned to be one of the biggest housing projects in Spain.
Challenges and Changes
However, this huge project faced some problems. For example, important services like water and gas lines were not fully planned for all the homes. This meant some completed homes might not have been ready to live in. Also, the project was approved very quickly, which raised questions.
After some time, the company had trouble selling enough homes and getting enough money to finish the project. By mid-2008, fewer than 3,000 apartments had been sold. Also, less than a third of the sold apartments were actually lived in. This made the development seem like a "ghost town" for a while.
A New Chapter for the Development
In the early 2020s, many of the homes in Residencial Francisco Hernando became occupied. This happened as the area around La Sagra grew, especially with more businesses that handle storage and shipping. Because of this, the local government in Seseña decided to allow more buildings to be constructed. In 2022, they planned to build even more homes than originally imagined, up to 13,825!
Seseña in Books
The Residencial Francisco Hernando development also inspired a book. It is the setting for the 2022 novel Lejos by Rosa Ribas
. This book was also published in English with the title Far.See also
