Seth Martin (born May 4, 1933, died September 6, 2014) was a fantastic Canadian ice hockey goalie. He played a short time in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the St. Louis Blues during the 1967–68 season. Most of his amazing career, from 1953 to 1973, was spent playing in senior and minor leagues. Seth also proudly played for the Canadian national team in four World Championships, even winning a gold medal in 1961! He also played in the 1964 Winter Olympics. Because of his great achievements, he was added to the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame in 1997.
Seth Martin's Hockey Journey
Seth Martin was a key player for the Trail Smoke Eaters, helping them win the 1961 World Championships. This was a really special win because they were the last Canadian amateur team to ever win the World Championships! Seth was recognized as the best goalie of that tournament.
He didn't stop there! Seth played in four more World Championships with the Smoke Eaters. He was named the best goalie in three of those four tournaments, showing how consistently good he was. He also represented Canada at the 1964 Winter Olympics, where his team finished in fourth place.
In 1967, Seth got a chance to play in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues during their very first season. He played in 30 games, helping out as a backup goalie to the famous Glenn Hall. The Blues had an exciting season, making it all the way to the 1968 Stanley Cup Finals. However, they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in four straight games.
After that NHL season, Seth had a big decision to make. He had to choose between continuing his NHL career or keeping his firefighter's pension. He chose to keep his pension and moved back to Trail, British Columbia. Even though he left the NHL, he kept playing hockey and later became a coach. Seth Martin passed away in 2014 in Trail after a heart attack, at the age of 81.
