Severn River (central Ontario) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Severn River is a cool river in central Ontario, Canada. It starts at the north end of Lake Couchiching. The river flows out of Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe. It then travels northwest into Georgian Bay, which is a big part of Lake Huron.

The Trent-Severn Waterway

The Severn River is an important part of a special water route. This route is called the Trent–Severn Waterway. It's like a water highway that connects different lakes and rivers.

Connecting Lakes and Bays

The Trent-Severn Waterway links Port Severn on Georgian Bay with Trenton on Lake Ontario. It uses the Trent Canal to do this. This waterway helps boats travel a long distance across Ontario.

A River's History

For many years, the Severn River was used to move logs. This was before the whole waterway was finished in 1920. The logs were floated downriver to sawmills. Today, the river has two power stations. These stations use the river's flow to make electricity.

Life on the Severn River

The central Ontario Severn River is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) long. Many people have cottages along the river. Some of these cottages can only be reached by boat.

Boating and Tourism

The river is very popular for boating. Many yachts and cruisers travel between Lake Couchiching and Georgian Bay. Some people even live along the Severn River all year round.

The Big Chute Marine Railway

One of the most exciting spots on the Severn River is the Big Chute Marine Railway. It's a very rare type of boat lift. Instead of a lock, it lifts boats out of the water. Then it carries them over land on a special railway!

The Big Chute is a big attraction for tourists. It helps boats move between Gloucester Pool and the rest of the Severn River.

Camping Rules

Many people enjoy camping near the Severn River. However, overnight camping is not allowed in all areas. Places like Lost Channel and Pretty Channel have rules against overnight camping. Police help make sure these rules are followed.

River's Old Name

Long ago, the Severn River had a different name. In 1793, it was known as the River Matchetache. This old name was mentioned in a historical book from 1891.
