Abdurrahman Seyfettin Arkan, also known as Seyfi Nasih, was a famous Turkish architect. He was born in 1903 and passed away in 1966. He is best known for being the personal architect of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. Arkan designed important buildings like the Glass Villa at the President's official home, Çankaya Köşkü. He also designed the Florya Atatürk Marine Mansion in 1935, a beautiful building by the sea that was once Atatürk's home and is now a museum. This mansion is a great example of the Bauhaus style of architecture.

Early Life and Training

Seyfi Arkan was born in 1903 in Istanbul, Turkey. He went to Kadikoy French School for his primary education. Then, he attended Galatasaray High School for his secondary education. After high school, he decided to study architecture.

He joined the Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi, which was the Academy of Fine Arts at the time. He studied under a famous architect named Vedat Tek and graduated in 1928. Arkan was a very talented student.

After winning a competition for the Canakkale Monument, the Ministry of National Education sent him to Europe. This was so he could continue his architecture studies. From 1929 to 1932, he studied with Hans Poelzig in Germany. Poelzig was a very influential modern architect. Arkan also worked in Poelzig's design studio. While in Europe, Arkan studied different types of buildings. He researched school buildings, homes for workers, and sports stadiums.

Seyfi Arkan returned to Turkey in 1933. He began working as an instructor at the Academy of Fine Arts. He taught about urbanism, which is the study of how cities are planned and developed. Poelzig's modern ideas about architecture greatly influenced Arkan's work. The culture of Berlin also had a big impact on him. Arkan also thought a lot about Turkey's economic and social situation in the 1930s and 1940s. These factors helped shape his architectural projects.

Important Projects and Awards

Seyfi Arkan won many design competitions throughout his career. His first major win was the Çankaya Hariciye Kosku contest in 1933. After this, he became the private architect for Atatürk. This meant he designed many important buildings specifically for Atatürk.

  • The Florya Atatürk Marine Mansion, which won first prize in 1934. This beautiful building was designed as a summer residence for Atatürk.
  • The Sümerbank General Directorate Building, which won first prize in 1935.
  • The Bank of Provinces (Municipalities) Architectural Design Competition, where he won first prize in 1935.
  • The Istanbul Port Galata Passenger Lounge, which won first prize in 1936. This was an important building for travelers arriving by ship.
  • The Winter and Summer Turkey Embassy Building and Interior Design Competition in Tehran and Simran, where he won first prize in 1937.
  • He also received awards for projects like the Turkey Grand National Assembly Building in 1938.
  • In 1946, he won first prize for a Teacher's Dormitory design. He also won third prize for the Trabzon Exhibition House.
  • Later in his career, he received honorable mentions for the Turkey Anafartalar Is Bank Office Building in 1955. He also received an honorable mention for the Ankara Ulus Square Hotel and Is Bank in 1956.
  • One of his last major awards was second prize for the 25,000 Capacity Stadium Cebeci Architectural Competition in 1957.

Seyfi Arkan's work left a lasting mark on Turkish architecture. He helped shape the modern look of many important buildings in Turkey.
