Shadow Brook, also known as East Springfield Brook, is a small river located in northern Otsego County, New York State. It starts its journey north-northeast of a small community called East Springfield. The brook then flows into Otsego Lake, which is south-southeast of Springfield Center. This area is also close to Glimmerglass State Park. Shadow Brook is important because its watershed is the largest one that feeds into Otsego Lake.

History of Shadow Brook and Hyde Hall Bridge

Shadow Brook has a special connection to history. It flows right under the famous Hyde Hall Bridge. This is a type of bridge known as a covered bridge, meaning it has a roof and sides. It was built way back in 1825.

Building the Hyde Hall Bridge

The Hyde Hall Bridge is 53 feet (about 16 meters) long. It uses a special design called a Burr Arch Truss. This design combines strong wooden arches with a framework of crisscrossing beams. A skilled carpenter named Cyrenus Clark led the building of the bridge. He had help from another carpenter, Andrew Alden, and a stonemason, Lorenzo Bates, who worked on the stone parts.

Bridge Renovations and Importance

Over the years, the bridge has been kept in good condition. The State of New York helped renovate it in 1967. The Hyde Hall Bridge is one of 29 historic covered bridges that you can find in New York State. These bridges are important parts of history and engineering.
