In 2000, there were 7,798 people living in Shady Hills. They lived in about 2,811 homes. Many of these homes, about 2,144, were families.
The people living in Shady Hills come from different backgrounds. Most residents are White. A smaller number are African American, Native American, or Asian. Some people are from two or more races. About 3.90% of the population is of Hispanic or Latino background.

Pigeon Racing in Shady Hills
Shady Hills is a very important place for pigeon racing. It's home to the Gulfcoast Homing Club. This club is made up of people who love to race homing pigeons. These special pigeons are trained to fly long distances back to their homes.
The club holds a big event every year called the Gulfcoast Classic competition. In 2011, this event offered $250,000 in prize money! The races can be very challenging, with birds flying up to 600 miles to get back to their lofts (the places where they live).
The center of all this pigeon racing activity is a neighborhood called The Highlands. This area is just south of the Hernando County line. The Gulfcoast Homing Club has about 200 members, and around 100 people in the area own homing pigeons.
