Shaftsbury Settlement is a small community in Alberta, Canada. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a town or city. Instead, it's part of a larger area called the Municipal District of Peace No. 135.
This community is located in northern Alberta. You can find it southeast of Highway 684, about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) south of Highway 2. It's also right next to the Town of Peace River and sits on the west bank of the Peace River.
Shaftsbury Settlement was named after Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. He was an important person in England. The community was started in 1888 by a man named Rev. John Gough Brick. He came from England and set up an Anglican mission here. A mission is like a center for religious work and community support.
In 1910 or 1911, a telegraph line was built from Edmonton to Shaftsbury. This was a big deal! It meant people could send messages much faster than before. This line also allowed for telephone calls, bringing quick news and communication to the area for the first time.
