The Shamattawa First Nation (Cree: ᑭᓭᒫᑖᐘ, kisêmâtâwa) is a special First Nations community. It is located in the northern part of Manitoba, Canada. This community is on a piece of land called the Shamattawa 1 Indian reserve.

About Shamattawa First Nation

Shamattawa is known as a remote place. This means it is far away from big cities and towns. The community is home to one of Canada's Indigenous peoples. In 2016, about 1,019 people lived here. This was a small increase from 998 people in 2011.

Where is Shamattawa?

The Shamattawa 1 reserve sits right by the beautiful Gods River. Another river, the Echoing River, joins the Gods River here. This makes for a scenic location. The community is deep in the northern part of Manitoba.

How People Travel and Get Supplies

Because Shamattawa is so remote, it's not always easy to reach. For part of the year, the only way to get there by land is on winter and ice roads. These are temporary roads built over frozen water and land. They connect Shamattawa to other parts of Manitoba. Winter roads also go east towards Fort Severn and Peawanuck, Ontario.

The community also has its own airport, called Shamattawa Airport. This allows people and supplies to fly in and out. There is only one grocery store in the community. This store provides important food and other items for everyone living there.

Amazing Wildlife Sightings

Sometimes, interesting wildlife can be seen near Shamattawa. For example, a polar bear was spotted in August 2010. This was very unusual because it was about 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of where polar bears usually live. It shows how wild and natural the area around Shamattawa is.

Shamattawa's Weather

Shamattawa has a subarctic climate. This means it has mild summers and very cold winters. The weather can change quickly due to its closeness to the Hudson Bay.

The community gets a moderate amount of rain and snow. More precipitation falls in the summer months than at other times of the year.
