Shammi Kapoor (born Shamsher Raj Kapoor; 21 October 1931 – 14 August 2011) was a famous Indian actor. He worked mainly in Hindi cinema, also known as Bollywood. People often called him the Elvis Presley of India because of his energetic dancing.
Shammi Kapoor won two Filmfare Awards. He received the Best Actor award for his role in Brahmachari (1968). Later, he won the Best Supporting Actor award for Vidhaata (1982). In 1995, he was given the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his long and successful career.
He was part of the famous Kapoor family, known for many actors. Shammi Kapoor started his film journey in 1953. He became a huge star in the 1960s, known for his unique style and dance moves.

Shammi Kapoor was born Shamsher Raj Kapoor in Bombay (now Mumbai). His father was Prithviraj Kapoor, a well-known actor and theater owner. Shammi was one of three sons; his brothers were Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor, who also became famous actors. His uncle, Trilok Kapoor, was also an actor.
Shammi spent some of his childhood in Calcutta (now Kolkata). This was because his father worked in films there. He went to school in Kolkata and later in Mumbai. After finishing school, he briefly attended Ramnarain Ruia College.
Journey into Films
Before becoming a film actor, Shammi Kapoor worked with his father's theater company, Prithvi Theatres. He started as a junior artist in 1948. He worked there for four years, learning about acting and stage work.
In 1953, Shammi Kapoor made his first film appearance in Jeewan Jyoti. In his early career, some of his films were not very successful. He often played roles alongside more experienced actresses.
Rise to Stardom
Shammi Kapoor's career changed with the film Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957). He then gained more fame with Dil Deke Dekho (1959). These films helped him become known as a fun and stylish actor.
His big breakthrough came with the hit film Junglee (1961). After this, he became one of the most popular stars in Bollywood during the 1960s. He starred in many successful romantic comedies and musicals. Some of his famous films from this time include Professor (1962), Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), Teesri Manzil (1966), and An Evening In Paris (1967).
Shammi Kapoor was known for his unique dancing style. He often created his own dance steps for songs in his movies. This made him stand out from other actors. The singer Mohammed Rafi often sang for Shammi Kapoor in his films, and their combination was very popular.
In 1968, he won his first Best Actor Filmfare Award for Brahmachari. He was a leading romantic hero in Hindi films for many years.
Later Career and Supporting Roles
By the 1970s, Shammi Kapoor started taking on more supporting roles. His last main role as a romantic hero was in Andaz (1971). He then became a successful supporting actor. For example, he played the father of Saira Banu in Zameer, even though he had been her leading man earlier.
He also tried directing two films, Manoranjan (1974) and Bundal Baaz (1976). While these films received good reviews, they were not big hits at the box office.
In the 1980s and 1990s, he continued to act in many supporting roles. He won another Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Vidhaata (1982). He also appeared on television in the 1990s. His last film appearance was in Rockstar (2011), which starred his grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor.
Personal Life and Interests
Shammi Kapoor married actress Geeta Bali in 1955. They had a son, Aditya Raj Kapoor, and a daughter, Kanchan. Sadly, Geeta Bali passed away in 1965. Four years later, Shammi Kapoor married Neila Devi in 1969.
Beyond acting, Shammi Kapoor was very interested in the internet. He was a founder and chairman of the Internet Users Community of India (IUCI). He also helped set up other internet organizations. He even had a website dedicated to the Kapoor family.
His Legacy and Passing
Shammi Kapoor passed away on 14 August 2011, at the age of 79. He had been suffering from kidney problems. His funeral was held in Mumbai, with many family members and famous Bollywood personalities attending to pay their respects.
To honor his memory, a brass statue of Shammi Kapoor was placed at the Walk of the Stars in Mumbai. He is remembered as a pioneering actor who brought a new style of dancing and energy to Indian cinema.
