Shankar Mahadevan, born on March 3, 1967, is a famous Indian singer and music composer. He is part of a super talented music group called Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. This group creates amazing music for Indian movies. In 2023, he received a special honorary doctorate degree from Birmingham City University for his great work.

Shankar Mahadevan's Early Life and Music Journey

Shankar Mahadevan was born in Chembur, Mumbai, India. His family originally came from Palakkad, Kerala. From a very young age, Shankar showed a love for music.

Learning Music as a Child

As a child, Shankar learned two main types of Indian classical music:

  • Hindustani classical music
  • Carnatic music

He started playing the veena, an Indian string instrument, when he was just five years old. His first teacher was Shri Lalitha Venkataraman. He also learned music from other great teachers like Pandit Shrinivas Khale and T.R. Balamani.

Education and First Job

Shankar went to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School in Chembur. Later, he studied Computer Science and Software Engineering. He graduated in 1988 from the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology. Before becoming a full-time musician, he worked as a software engineer for a company called Leading Edge.

Shankar's Family

Shankar Mahadevan has two sons. Their names are Siddharth Mahadevan and Shivam Mahadevan. Both of his sons are also singers, following in their father's footsteps!

How Shankar Mahadevan Became Famous

Shankar Mahadevan first became well-known as an "indipop" star. Indipop is a type of Indian pop music. He was famous for mixing different music styles like Carnatic, Hindustani, and Jazz.

The Breathless Album

In 1998, Shankar released a non-film album called Breathless. This album became super popular and topped the music charts in India. It helped him gain a lot of fame before he started composing for films.

  • 2009: Asianet Film Award for Best Male Playback for "Pichavecha Naal" from Puthiya Mukham.
  • 2011: Lata Mangeshkar Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
  • 2012: National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for "Bolo Na" from Chittagong.
  • 2019: Padma Shri Award for his contributions to film music. This is one of India's highest civilian honors.
  • 2023: Received an honorary doctorate degree from Birmingham City University.
  • 2024: Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album for This Moment as a member of the band Shakti.
