Shankar Mahadevan is the main singer of the group. He grew up in Mumbai, India. From a young age, he learned Hindustani classical music and Carnatic music. He even started playing the veena when he was only five years old!

Shankar first worked as a software engineer. But his love for music soon took over. He won his first award for singing in a Tamil movie. This was for a song in Kandukondain Kandukondain, where he worked with A. R. Rahman. He became even more famous when his music album, Breathless, came out in 1998. In 2019, he received the Padma Shri Award. This is a very high honor in India for his amazing work in film music. Shankar has two sons, Siddharth and Shivam, who are also singers.

Ehsaan Noorani: The Guitarist

Ehsaan Noorani is the talented guitarist of Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. He learned music from a young age. Before studying music in Los Angeles, USA, he played in two bands in Mumbai.

When he returned to Mumbai, Ehsaan became very popular for composing jingles (short catchy tunes for ads). He worked with many top composers. His big break came when he was asked to compose a jingle for Sona Spices. This started his journey as an independent jingle composer.

Ehsaan was asked to create music for a film called Dus. He then invited Shankar and Loy to join him. This was the start of their journey as a trio. Ehsaan is the only Indian musician to have his own special guitar line, 'The Ehsaan Noorani Fender Squier' series. This is from Fender guitars, a very famous guitar company.

Loy Mendonsa: The Keyboardist

Loy Mendonsa plays the piano, bass guitar, and harmonica. He is also learning to play the trumpet! Loy was a music teacher in New Delhi. He got his first big chance when he was asked to write music for a TV show called Quiz Time.

After that, Loy composed music for other TV shows, including The World This Week and the Shahrukh Khan TV show Fauji. Loy moved to Mumbai and met Ehsaan in 1989. They started working together, creating many ad jingles. Loy's daughter, Alyssa Mendonsa, is also a singer and has sung in their songs.

How the Trio Formed

Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy were all involved in non-film music before they started working in movies. They played rock, blues, jazz, and pop music.
