Karan Yash Johar (born Rahul Kumar Johar; 25 May 1972) is a famous Indian filmmaker, producer, and TV host. He mostly works in Hindi cinema, also known as Bollywood. He runs a big film company called Dharma Productions. Karan Johar has won many important awards, including two National Film Awards and seven Filmfare Awards. In 2020, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, which is a very special award.
Karan Johar is the son of film producer Yash Johar. He started his career as a director with the romantic movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). This film won him the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and the Filmfare Award for Best Director. His next movies, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), were also huge hits in India and around the world. His movie My Name Is Khan (2010) earned him another Filmfare Award for Best Director.
Besides directing, Johar has produced many successful films like Raazi (2018) and Shershaah (2021). These films helped him become one of the top filmmakers in Hindi cinema. Early Life and Family
Karan Johar was born on 25 May 1972 in Mumbai, India. His father was Yash Johar, who started Dharma Productions. His mother is Hiroo Johar. His family comes from Punjabi and Sindhi backgrounds. He went to school at Greenlawns High School and then H.R. College of Commerce in Mumbai.
Karan Johar first started in entertainment as an actor. He played a role in the TV show Indradhanush in 1989. When he was young, he loved Indian movies and was inspired by famous directors like Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra. For some time, he used a practice called numerology for his film titles, making sure many words started with the letter 'K'. But after watching a movie called Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006, he decided to stop this practice.
In February 2017, Karan Johar became a father to twins, a boy and a girl, through surrogacy. He named his son Yash, after his father. He named his daughter Roohi, by rearranging his mother's name Hiroo.
Film Career as a Director
First Films and Big Success
Karan Johar began his film journey as an assistant director and actor for the hit movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). This movie is one of the most successful Indian films ever.
His first movie as a director was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). It was a romantic comedy-drama. The first part of the movie is about a college love triangle. It features Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji. The second part shows the main character trying to reconnect with his best friend. This film was a huge hit and critics loved it. It won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. It also won many awards at the 44th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Director.
Johar's next big success was the family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001). This movie had many famous actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Kajol, and Kareena Kapoor. It was another huge hit for Johar and received great reviews. More Hits and New Stories
Karan Johar's third movie as a director was Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006). This musical drama was about relationships and was set in New York City. It became Johar's third big hit and was the highest-grossing Indian film overseas at that time. Critics praised Johar for trying a different style of filmmaking. The script of the movie was even invited to be part of the library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
His next movie was the social drama My Name Is Khan (2010). This was the first film he directed that he didn't write himself. The movie was released in 2023 and was a big success. It was one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of the year. Karan Johar's company, Dharma Productions, was started by his father, Yash Johar. After his father passed away in 2004, Karan took over the company. Most of the films he directs are made under this company.
Besides his own films, he has produced many successful movies directed by others. Some of these popular films include Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Dostana (2008), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), 2 States (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), Dear Zindagi (2016), Raazi (2018), Simmba (2018), Good Newwz (2019), Sooryavanshi (2021), and Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022).
Other Work in Entertainment
Karan Johar has also acted in movies. He had a small role as a friend in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). He has also made short appearances as himself in films like Om Shanti Om (2007) and Fashion (2008).
His first main acting role was as the villain Kaizad Khambatta in the period drama Bombay Velvet (2015). Even though the movie didn't do well, critics praised his acting performance.
