Yash Johar (born September 6, 1929 – died June 26, 2004) was a famous Indian film producer. He started a big movie company called Dharma Productions. Yash Johar's movies were known for their beautiful sets and often showed Indian traditions and family values. He was also the father of Karan Johar, who is now a well-known filmmaker too.

Early Life and Family

Yash Johar was born on September 6, 1929. His birthplace was Amritsar, in a region called Punjab in British India. He grew up in a Punjabi family.

He married Hiroo in 1971. Hiroo is the sister of two other famous filmmakers, B. R. Chopra and Yash Chopra. Yash Johar passed away on June 26, 2004, in Mumbai. He was 74 years old. After his death, his son, Karan Johar, took over his film company.

His Journey in Films

Yash Johar started his career in the early 1950s. He first worked as a publicist, which means he helped promote movies. He was also a still photographer. One of his first jobs was for the film Badal in 1951.

Later, he joined a company called Filmistan. There, he worked as a production executive. This role meant he helped manage how movies were made. He worked on films like Love in Simla (1960).

In 1962, he moved to Sunil Dutt's film company, Ajanta Arts. He became a production controller. This job involved overseeing the making of films. He helped with movies such as Mujhe Jeene Do.

He also helped filmmaker Dev Anand with his successful film Guide in 1965. Yash Johar continued to work with Dev Anand's company, Navketan Films. He helped produce other popular movies like Jewel Thief and Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

Starting Dharma Productions

In 1976, Yash Johar started his very own film company. He named it Dharma Productions. The first movie his company produced was Dostana in 1980. This film was directed by Raj Khosla and became a big hit.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Dharma Productions made several other movies. Some well-known ones include:

Yash Johar also worked on a Hollywood film. He was an associate producer for The Jungle Book in 1994.

Big Success with Karan Johar

Dharma Productions became even more successful in 1998. This was when Yash Johar's son, Karan Johar, directed his first film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. This movie starred famous actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, and Salman Khan. It was a huge hit both in India and in other countries. The film also won many awards.

Karan Johar's second movie, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001), was also very successful. Yash Johar was involved in its production too.

Yash Johar also helped set up another film company called Dreamz Unlimited in 1999. This company was started by Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Aziz Mirza. He helped manage the production of their first film, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000).

The last film Yash Johar worked on was Kal Ho Naa Ho in 2003. This movie was a major success. It was the highest-earning film in India and overseas that year.
