Shantell May Martin (born October 1, 1980) is a British artist. She is known for her unique, large black-and-white line drawings. Shantell often creates these drawings live in front of an audience. She was born in Thamesmead, London, England. Today, she lives and works in Los Angeles and New York. Her art is shown in museums and galleries. She also works with many companies and organizations around the world.

Early Life and Learning

Shantell Martin was born in Thamesmead, a part of London, England. She went to school in Bexleyheath nearby. After studying for a year at Camberwell College of Arts, she went to Central Saint Martins in London. She graduated with honors in 2003.

After finishing college, Shantell lived in Japan. There, she started to experiment with live performance art. She worked as a "visual jockey" (VJ), creating live drawings that were projected with sound or music. From 2006 to 2009, she developed this skill, calling it "liveography."

Shantell Martin's Art Career

In 2008, Shantell Martin moved to New York. This was a big step in her career. She began to focus mostly on creating physical drawings.

Her first solo art show was called Continuous Line. It was held at the Black and White Gallery in New York. Her first solo museum show, ARE YOU YOU, opened at MoCADA in Brooklyn. Later, she worked with her grandmother on a project called Black and White. This art piece used embroidery and was shown at the Brooklyn Museum. She has also shown her art at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City. Other places include the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto and the Albright–Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York.

Shantell also created a live drawing installation at the Museum of Modern Art in New York for a special event.

Artist Residencies

Shantell Martin has been an artist-in-residence at several places. These include the 92nd Street Y in New York and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. She also had residencies at Summit Series in Utah, Clark College in Washington, and Autodesk in San Francisco. An artist residency is a time when an artist lives and works in a specific place to create new art.

Teaching and Public Work

Since 2013, Shantell has been a professor at NYU Tisch ITP. She was also a visiting scholar at MIT Media Lab. She taught a course called "Drawing on Everything." From 2011 to 2017, she was a research affiliate at the MIT Media Lab. She also served on the advisory board for the Climate Museum in New York. In 2014, she took part in the Sundance Institute's New Frontier program, which supports new ideas in film and art.

Shantell Martin is also a well-known public figure. In 2012, her bedroom and artwork were shown in The New York Times. Her personal style has been featured in Vogue magazine. In 2014, The New Yorker made a short video about her creative process called "Follow the Pen."

In 2019, the Denver Art Museum held an exhibition of her work. She drew her famous black-and-white designs on the museum's walls, floors, and ceilings. The exhibition explored ideas about identity and play. Shantell's drawings in the museum changed over time, making each visit unique.

Working with Others

Shantell Martin has worked with many different people and brands.

In 2016, she performed with musician Kendrick Lamar for 75 minutes at Art Basel in Miami. She has also worked with Puma on three different clothing and shoe collections. For her third collaboration in 2018, Puma opened a special pop-up shop in New York City.

She has also collaborated with famous companies like Tiffany & Co., The North Face, and Vespa. She worked with 1800 Tequila as part of their "Essential Artists" series. For designer Kelly Wearstler, Shantell created a mural for a store and designed a line of clothing and furniture.

In June 2021, she gave a TED Talk titled “How Drawing Can Set You Free.” In March 2022, she spoke at SXSW to help artists learn how to work successfully with brands.

Special Art Projects

Shantell Martin has received special art commissions. A commission means an artist is hired to create a specific piece of art.

She created a special art piece for the lobby of the New York City Ballet. She also made a permanent mural for the headquarters of Young & Rubicam in Manhattan. In March 2022, Shantell Martin showed her first choreographed ballet, called “KITES,” at the Boston Ballet.
