Sharna May Burgess (born on June 21, 1985) is an Australian ballroom dancer. She is famous for being a professional dancer and part of the dance group on the American TV show Dancing with the Stars. Sharna won season 27 of the show with her celebrity partner Bobby Bones. She also finished as a runner-up in several other seasons. Since 2019, she has also been a judge on the Australian version of the show.

Early life and Dance Start

Sharna Burgess was born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. Her parents are Ray and Lucy Burgess. Even though she was a bit of a tomboy, Sharna fell in love with dance. As she grew up, she tried many sports and different types of dance.

When she was five, she started learning ballet, jazz, and gymnastics. At eight years old, she began studying ballroom dance. She quickly won many local and national dance titles. By age 15, she was chosen to dance for Australia at the World Championships. She competed in both Standard and Latin dance styles. Sharna also performed in the Closing Ceremonies of the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Sharna's Dance Career

When Sharna was 18, she moved to London. There, she won more dance awards and toured the UK with a show called Simply Ballroom. After that, a famous choreographer named Jason Gilkison invited her to join the Burn the Floor tour. She danced with this group for six years. Sharna was also part of the Burn the Floor cast when the show moved to Broadway.

Dancing with the Stars Journey

Sharna's first TV appearances were on the Australian Dancing with the Stars. She also appeared on So You Think You Can Dance in Belgium and the Netherlands.

She joined the American Dancing with the Stars in season 13. She was a member of the show's dance group, called the troupe. While in the troupe, she also helped choreographer Jason Gilkison on both the Australian and American versions of So You Think You Can Dance. She stayed with the troupe until the end of season 15.

For season 16, Sharna became a main professional dancer. Her first celebrity partner was Andy Dick. She returned for season 17 with retired NFL star Keyshawn Johnson. They were the first couple to be eliminated that season.

In season 18, she danced with Olympic ice dancer Charlie White. They were eliminated in week 9, finishing in 5th place. Judges often praised their performances and gave them high scores. Sharna then danced in season 19 with talk-show host Tavis Smiley. They were eliminated in week 2, finishing 12th.

For season 20, Sharna partnered with combat veteran and speaker Noah Galloway. They reached the finals and finished in third place. In season 21, she danced with Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter. They made it to the finals and finished in second place.

In season 22, her partner was NFL player Antonio Brown. They reached the semi-finals and finished in 4th place. For season 23, Sharna was partnered with race car driver James Hinchcliffe. Due to a knee injury, Sharna could not dance for two weeks. Another dancer, Jenna Johnson, filled in for her. The couple reached the finals and finished in 2nd place.

For season 24, Sharna danced with professional bull rider Bonner Bolton. They were eliminated in week 8, finishing in fifth place. Sharna returned for season 25 with former NBA player Derek Fisher. They were eliminated in week 4, finishing eleventh.

In season 26, she was partnered with NFL player Josh Norman. They made it to the finals and finished in second place. For season 27, she danced with radio personality Bobby Bones. Even though judges often gave them low scores, viewers kept voting for them. They ended up winning the competition!

On February 2, 2019, it was announced that Sharna would become a judge on the Australian Dancing with the Stars. She did not appear on season 28 of the American version. She returned the next year for season 29 with actor Jesse Metcalfe. They were eliminated in the fifth week, finishing 12th. In Season 30, she danced with her real-life partner Brian Austin Green and finished 13th.

Personal Life

After dancing in the World Championships semi-finals, Sharna found out she had a small tear in her knee. But she chose to finish the competition before getting it treated.

She dated choreographer and dancer Paul Kirkland from 2010 to 2015.

Sharna is now engaged to Brian Austin Green. They met in 2020 after friends introduced them. In February 2022, they shared that they were going to have a baby. Their son was born on June 28, 2022. On September 22, 2023, Sharna announced on Instagram that she and Brian were engaged.

On October 6, 2022, Sharna Burgess became a citizen of the United States.
