Shavonda E. Sumter was born on January 19, 1974. She is an American politician who belongs to the Democratic Party. Since January 2012, she has been a representative for the 35th Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly.

About Shavonda Sumter
Shavonda Sumter was born in Paterson, New Jersey. Her parents are Charles and Bonnie Williams. She went to schools in Paterson, Prospect Park, and Haledon.
Education and Career
In 1996, she graduated from Kean University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in political science. Later, she received a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree. This degree was in health care administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Shavonda Sumter has a lot of experience in health services. She works as a director at Mountainside Medical Center in Glen Ridge. There, she helps manage behavioral health services.
Early Political Involvement
Since 2008, Sumter has been a member of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee. This group helps guide the Democratic Party in New Jersey.
In 2008, she was part of the Electoral College. This group of people officially votes for the President and Vice President of the United States. She cast a vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
In 2010, Sumter helped manage the campaign for Jeffery Jones. He successfully ran to become the Mayor of Paterson.
Family Life
Shavonda Sumter lives in North Haledon. She is married to Kenneth Sumter. They have two children together: Tyler, born in 1998, and Kenneth Jr., born in 2000.

Becoming an Assemblywoman
In 2011, there were two open spots in the Assembly for the 35th District. This happened because Nellie Pou ran for the State Senate, and Elease Evans retired. Shavonda Sumter and her running mate, Benjie E. Wimberly, won these seats. They defeated the Republican candidates, William Connolly and Donna Puglisi. Sumter officially started her job on January 10, 2012.
