Building Design and Awards
The outside of the Shaw Center for the Arts is made of special clear glass. This glass was made in Germany. In 2005, the building won an award from the American Institute of Architects. They liked its "aggressive concept" and how well its front fit with the open area outside.
The center was built using money from both public and private groups. The Shaw Group gave a lot of money. Because of this, the building was named after them. However, The Shaw Group does not own the center or employ its staff. Other big donors were the Manship and Pennington families, and Lamar Advertising.
The Shaw Center has won several awards for its great design. These include:
- 2008 American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Honor Award
- 2005 AIA Gulf States Region Honor Award
- 2005 AIA New England Region Honor Award
- 2005 Boston Society of Architects Award for Design
- 2005 Boston Society of Architects Higher Education Award Citation
The main architects who designed the building are:
- Design Architect: Schwartz/Silver Architects from Boston, MA
- Executive Architect: Eskew+Dumez+Ripple from New Orleans, LA
- Associated Architect: Jerry M. Campbell & Associates from Baton Rouge, LA
