The Shawinigan Cataractes (which means Cataractes de Shawinigan in French) are a Canadian junior ice hockey team. They play in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The team is based in Shawinigan, Quebec. They play their home games at the Centre Gervais Auto. The team started out as the Shawinigan Bruins until 1973. Then, they were known as the Shawinigan Dynamos from 1973 to 1978.
What Does "Cataractes" Mean?
The word "Cataractes" is the plural form of "cataracte." This word means a powerful waterfall in English. It comes from the Latin word "cataracta," which also means 'waterfall.' The team is named after the Shawinigan Falls. This is a very famous waterfall in the city of Shawinigan.
