Hockey Career
Early Years and NHL Debut
Radim Vrbata was picked by the Colorado Avalanche in the seventh round of the 1999 NHL Draft. Before joining the NHL, he had great success playing for his home country. In 2001, he helped the Czech Republic win the World Junior Championship.
He played his first NHL game in February 2002 against the New York Islanders. Just one night later, he scored his first goal against the New York Rangers. In his first full season, he scored 18 goals and had 12 assists, often playing alongside hockey legends Peter Forsberg and Joe Sakic.
Moving Around the League
In March 2003, Vrbata was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. Later, in December 2005, he joined the Chicago Blackhawks. After two seasons with Chicago, he was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes (now the Arizona Coyotes) in 2007. In his first year with the Coyotes, he had his best season yet, leading the team in scoring.

In 2008, Vrbata signed a three-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. However, he returned to the Czech Republic for personal reasons during the season. He played for his hometown team, BK Mladá Boleslav, and another Czech team, HC Bílí Tygři Liberec.
Return to the Coyotes
After one season in Europe, Vrbata wanted to return to the NHL. On July 21, 2009, he was traded back to the Phoenix Coyotes. He played very well, scoring 43 goals over the next two seasons and helping the team make it to the Stanley Cup playoffs in both 2010 and 2011.
The 2011–12 season was a special one for Vrbata. He scored a career-high 35 goals. He also led the entire NHL with 12 game-winning goals, which means he scored the goal that put his team ahead to stay in 12 different games.
Time with the Canucks and Later Career
On July 2, 2014, Vrbata signed a two-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks. He said he was excited to play with famous players Daniel and Henrik Sedin. In his first season in Vancouver, he set a new personal record with 63 points (goals and assists combined). He also led the Canucks with 31 goals and was chosen for the 2015 NHL All-Star Game.
After his contract with the Canucks ended, Vrbata returned to the Arizona Coyotes for a third time in 2016. During that season, he became the NHL's all-time leader in shootout goals. A shootout is a tie-breaking method where players go one-on-one against the goalie.
He played his final season with the Florida Panthers in 2017–18. On April 7, 2018, Vrbata announced he was retiring from professional hockey after a successful 16-season career.
Personal Life
Vrbata's brother, David, is also a professional hockey player. Radim's son, Krystof, is following in his father's footsteps and plays for the Czechia U17 national team.
