Sherman Terrance Chaddlesone (born June 2, 1947 – died August 17, 2013) was a talented Kiowa artist. He was a painter and sculptor from Anadarko, Oklahoma. Sherman Chaddlesone was very important in Native American art during the late 1900s.

About Sherman Chaddlesone's Early Life

Sherman Chaddlesone was born in Lawton, Oklahoma. His parents were John Wesley and Alice Toppah Chaddlesone. He grew up near the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma. This area is close to a place called Saddle Mountain, Oklahoma.

Sherman Chaddlesone had a famous ancestor. He was a direct descendant of the great Kiowa war chief Satanta. Satanta was also known as White Bear.

Sherman Chaddlesone's Education

Sherman Chaddlesone went to Eisenhower High School in Lawton, Oklahoma. After high school, he studied art. He attended the Institute of American Indian and Alaska Native Culture and Arts (IAIA). This school is in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

At IAIA, he learned from famous artists. Some of his teachers were Allan Houser and Fritz Scholder. He also went to Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma. There, he did more advanced studies. While at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Sherman met his wife, Allie.

Military Service

Sherman Chaddlesone served his country. He was a soldier in the Vietnam War.

Sherman Chaddlesone's Art Career

Sherman Chaddlesone worked many jobs. Then, after 1982, he became a full-time artist. He was known for his paintings and sculptures. He used many different materials for his art. He painted with watercolor, acrylics, oils, and pastels. He also created sculptures from stone and bronze.

He received a special request to paint a large picture. This picture, called a mural, is in the Kiowa Tribal Complex. It is located in Carnegie, Oklahoma.

Sherman Chaddlesone showed his art in many places. His work was seen all over the country and even in other countries. He and his wife, Allie, also showed their art together. They exhibited their pieces at the Center of the American Indian.

Honors and Legacy

Sherman Chaddlesone's art continues to be important. One of his artworks is called Phantom Warriors. This piece is used as the logo for The New Plains Review Publishing Centre. This center is at the University of Central Oklahoma. This university was his old school.

The university also honors Sherman Chaddlesone in another way. They have the Sherman Chaddlesone Arts & Letters Lecture Series. This special event happens every Indigenous People's Day. Famous speakers have been part of this series. Some of them include Joy Harjo and D.G. Smalling.
