History of Carnegie
Carnegie was named after a very famous person. He was a Scottish-American businessman and generous helper named Andrew Carnegie. The town was first called Latham. It was planned to be two parts: North Latham and South Latham. North Latham was supposed to be the main business area. This was because people thought the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway would build tracks there.
However, the train tracks were built on the south side of the Washita River. So, South Latham became the main business center. North Latham never really grew. In 1903, when the town officially became a town, leaders decided to change its name to Carnegie. They hoped that Andrew Carnegie would help build a library there. The town did get a library, but Andrew Carnegie himself did not pay for it.
There is a building in Carnegie often called "Carnegie Hall." Its real name is the Carnegie Memorial Auditorium. Many community events are held there. For several years, there was a "Stars of Carnegie Hall" talent show. It showed off talented people from the area and the state.
Sports and Culture
Students at Carnegie High School have won many state championships in sports. The boys' basketball team won state titles in 1988, 1992, and 1996. The girls' cross country team won in 2002, 2003, and 2004. The boys' cross country team also won state titles in 1999, 2000, and 2020.
Carnegie is also home to the main offices of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma. This important Native American tribe has its headquarters right in town.
