The first European settler in Ruth was John Hunsanger in 1855. He came from Germany. More families from Germany joined him later. This area became known as the "German Settlement." It was also called "Adams Corners" for a while. This was because of a landowner named August H. Adams. He was also the first postmaster. In 1880, the community got a post office. It was named "Ruth" after Michael Ruth. He gave land for a train station.

  • White Rock is a community in the southeast part of the township. It's named after a large white limestone rock. This rock is in Lake Huron just offshore. The rock was important because it helped define the land given away in the Treaty of Detroit in 1807.
