Sherrone Moore (born February 3, 1986) is an American college football coach. He is currently the head football coach for the University of Michigan. Moore was an acting head coach for four games during Michigan's national championship-winning 2023 season. He became the main head coach in 2024, taking over from Jim Harbaugh.
Before coaching, Moore played football as an offensive guard for the University of Oklahoma. He also worked as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville and Central Michigan University. Moore joined the Michigan Wolverines coaching staff in 2018. He started as the tight ends coach and was later promoted to co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2021.

Early Life and Playing Career
Sherrone Moore was born in Derby, Kansas, on February 3, 1986. He went to Derby High School and graduated in 2004. After high school, he played two seasons of junior college football for Butler Community College.
In 2006, Moore transferred to play for the Oklahoma Sooners. He played in 14 games as an offensive guard. In 2008, he earned his bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Oklahoma.
Coaching Journey
Starting at Louisville
Moore began his coaching career at the University of Louisville in 2009. He worked as a graduate assistant under head coach Steve Kragthorpe. He continued in this role when Charlie Strong became the new head coach in 2010.
In 2012, Moore became a full-time assistant coach. He coached the tight ends until the end of the 2013 season. During his time as a graduate assistant, he also earned a master's degree in sports administration.
Moving to Central Michigan
In February 2014, Moore joined Central Michigan as the tight ends coach. He was hired by head coach Dan Enos. When John Bonamego became the new head coach in 2015, Moore stayed on the staff.
In 2017, Moore received more responsibilities. He was named assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator. He continued to coach the tight ends as well.
Joining the Michigan Wolverines
On January 15, 2018, Sherrone Moore was hired by the University of Michigan. He started as the tight ends coach. After three seasons, he was promoted on January 25, 2021. He became the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
Under Moore's guidance, Michigan's offensive line achieved great success. They won the Joe Moore Award in both 2021 and 2022. This award goes to the best offensive line in college football. Michigan was the first school to win this award two years in a row since it began in 2015.
2023 Season Highlights
At the start of the 2023 season, Moore was suspended for one game. This was due to past team rule issues. Head coach Jim Harbaugh was also suspended for three games. Moore served his suspension during Michigan's first game against East Carolina.
On September 16, Moore stepped in as acting head coach for the third game. Michigan played against Bowling Green. Moore led the team to a 31–6 victory, which was his first official win as a head coach.
Later in the 2023 season, Harbaugh faced another suspension. Moore again became the acting head coach for the final three regular season games. Michigan was undefeated with a 9–0 record when he took over.
- On November 11, Michigan defeated No. 10 Penn State on the road, 24–15.
- The next week, he led Michigan to a 31–24 win at Maryland. This was Michigan's 1,000th victory in college football history.
- In the last regular season game, Moore led the Wolverines to a 30–24 victory over No. 2 Ohio State.
Even though Moore was the acting head coach, these three wins were officially credited to Jim Harbaugh. After the regular season, Moore was recognized as a finalist for the Broyles Award. This award honors the top assistant coach in college football. Moore then returned to his role as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. He helped Michigan win the Big Ten Championship Game, the Rose Bowl, and the College Football Playoff National Championship. This completed an amazing 15–0 undefeated season for Michigan.
Becoming Head Coach in 2024
On January 26, 2024, Sherrone Moore was named Michigan's 21st head football coach. This happened after Jim Harbaugh left to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. Moore signed a five-year contract worth $27.5 million. He made history as the first African American head coach at the University of Michigan.
In November 2024, Moore had a big success in recruiting. He secured a commitment from Bryce Underwood, the top-ranked high school quarterback in the nation. This was a major achievement for his first recruiting class as head coach.
In his first full season as head coach, Moore led the Michigan Wolverines to an 8–5 record. This included important wins over Michigan State, Ohio State, and Alabama. Moore was the first Michigan head coach since Bennie Oosterbaan in 1948 to defeat Michigan State in his first year.
In the final regular season game, Michigan faced No. 2 Ohio State. Moore led his team to a 13–10 upset victory at Ohio Stadium. Michigan was considered a big underdog in this game. This win marked Michigan's fourth straight victory over Ohio State, the longest streak since 1991. Moore's record against Ohio State's coach, Ryan Day, improved to 2–0.
On December 31, 2024, Moore won his first postseason game. Michigan defeated No. 11 Alabama 19-13 in the ReliaQuest Bowl. Michigan was again considered a big underdog. This made Michigan the only college football program to beat Alabama twice in the same calendar year. They also became the first team since 1978 to win back-to-back games as double-digit underdogs.
Looking Ahead to 2025
On May 5, 2025, it was announced that Moore is expected to be suspended by the University of Michigan for two games. These would be the third and fourth games of the 2025 season.

Sherrone Moore is married to Kelli. They got married in 2015. They have two daughters together.
