Shigeo Yaegashi (八重樫 茂生, Yaegashi Shigeo, March 24, 1933 – May 2, 2011) was a famous Japanese football player and manager. He was known for his skills as a midfielder. Yaegashi played many games for the Japan national team and helped them win important medals.

Shigeo Yaegashi's Club Career
Shigeo Yaegashi was born in Daejeon, Japan, on March 24, 1933. He grew up in Hanamaki, Iwate. After playing football at Chuo University, he continued his studies and played at Waseda University.
Playing for Furukawa Electric
In 1958, after finishing university, Yaegashi joined a team called Furukawa Electric. He quickly became a key player. In 1963, he was even named the Japanese Footballer of the Year, which is a big award!
In 1965, his team, Furukawa Electric, joined the new Japan Soccer League. Yaegashi played until 1969 when he retired from playing. During his time in the league, he played 51 games and scored 14 goals. He was also chosen for the "Best Eleven" team three times, in 1966, 1967, and 1968.
Shigeo Yaegashi's National Team Journey
Shigeo Yaegashi started playing for the Japan national team in June 1956. He was still a student at Waseda University at the time. His first game was against South Korea on June 3, 1956.
Olympic Games Achievements
Yaegashi played in several Olympic Games. He represented Japan at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. He also played in the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo.
His last appearance for Japan was at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He even captained the team in their first match against Nigeria. Although he got injured during that game and couldn't play more, he continued to support his team. Japan went on to win a bronze medal at these Olympics, which was a huge achievement! In 2018, this amazing team was honored and selected for the Japan Football Hall of Fame.
Asian Games Participation
Besides the Olympics, Yaegashi also played for Japan in the Asian Games. He participated in the football tournaments at the 1958, 1962, and 1966 Asian Games. Overall, he played 45 games and scored 11 goals for Japan until 1968.
Shigeo Yaegashi's Coaching Career
After his successful playing career, Shigeo Yaegashi also became a football coach.
Coaching Club Teams
In 1967, while still playing for Furukawa Electric, he took on the role of a playing manager for the club. This meant he was both playing and coaching the team. After he retired as a player, he coached another club team, Fujitsu, two different times. He coached them from 1977 to 1981 and again from 1985 to 1989.
Awards and Legacy
Shigeo Yaegashi received several awards for his contributions to football:
- Japanese Football Player of Year: 1963
- Japan Soccer League Best Eleven: (3) 1966, 1967, 1968
In 2005, Shigeo Yaegashi was honored by being selected for the Japan Football Hall of Fame. This shows how important he was to Japanese football. He passed away on May 2, 2011, in Tama, Tokyo, at the age of 78.
