Her Early Life and Education

Shimul Javeri Kadri is the youngest of three children. When she was just thirteen years old, she decided she wanted to become an architect. She studied architecture at the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai and finished her studies in 1985.

In 1986, she went to the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in the United States. There, she studied urban planning, which is about designing cities and towns. After her studies, she worked for a company in California. She returned to India in 1990 and soon after, she started her own company, SJK Architects.

Building Amazing Projects

Shimul Javeri Kadri has designed many interesting buildings. One of her projects was the Synergy Lifestyles factory in Karur. She also designed Sparkrill International School and SR Engineering College in Warangal.

Another special project was Ayushakti, an ayurvedic health resort in Mumbai. It was tricky to build this resort because it was in a busy part of Mumbai. The plot of land was very narrow, with buildings on three sides. But Shimul managed to design it so it felt full of light, air, space, joy, and peace. She also led the design for a hotel in Bodh Gaya and an apartment building in Chennai.

Shimul also helps others. She is a trustee for Akshara, a women's resource center in Mumbai. She also works with Save the Children India, where she helps guide projects focused on education and supporting women.

Awards and Recognition

Shimul Javeri Kadri and her firm have received many awards for their designs.

• The Automobile Design Studio for Mahindra and Mahindra Limited in India won the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design Award in 2016.
• The Dasavatara Hotel in Tirupati, India, won a special prize at the Prix Versailles in 2016.
• The Lotus Cafe inside the same hotel also won the Prix Versailles in the Restaurants category.
• The Nirvana Films office in Bengaluru won several awards. These include the World Architecture Festival Small Project of the Year Award in 2012. It also received the Excellence in Design Award and the FuturArc Green Leadership Award.

In 2018, Architectural Digest magazine named her firm as one of their AD100 award winners. This means they were recognized as one of the top 100 design firms.
