Erigeron barbellulatus, also known as shining fleabane, is a type of fleabane plant. It belongs to the daisy family, just like sunflowers and dandelions!
Where Shining Fleabane Grows
This small plant is very special because it is endemic to one area. This means it is only found in northeastern California. You can find it in the Sierra Nevada mountains, from Lassen County down to Tulare County.
Shining fleabane likes to grow on rocky and gravelly slopes. It lives high up in the mountains, at elevations between 2,100 and 3,300 meters (about 6,900 to 10,800 feet). It can be found in different habitats, from areas with sagebrush and pine trees to subalpine forests.
What Shining Fleabane Looks Like
Erigeron barbellulatus is a small plant that lives for many years. We call plants that live for more than two years "perennial herbs." It usually grows to be about 15 centimeters (6 inches) tall.
Each plant typically has one flower head. This flower head looks like a single flower, but it's actually made of many tiny flowers grouped together. It has 15 to 35 white, lavender, or blue "ray florets." These are the parts that look like petals around the outside. In the center, there are many small "disc florets," which are the tiny flowers that make up the middle part of the flower head.
