A Look Back: The History of Shiogama Jinja

Shiogama Jinja is a very old shrine. It was first built over a thousand years ago, in the ninth century. In ancient times, it was known as one of the two most important Shinto shrines, called ichinomiya, for a large area known as the Mutsu Province.

Even when Japan changed its old provinces into new prefectures during the Meiji period (a time of big changes in Japan, from 1868 to 1912), Shiogama Jinja remained very important. It continued to be the chief shrine for the same region, which now includes parts of Miyagi Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture. This shows how special and respected Shiogama Jinja has been throughout history.
