Its borders were similar to parts of what we now call Shiribeshi Subprefecture and the northern part of Hiyama Subprefecture today.

A Look at Its History

After 1869, the northern Japanese island became known as Hokkaido. New smaller areas were created within it. Shiribeshi Province was one of these new areas, formed in 1869.

During the Meiji period, the provinces of Japan were changed into prefectures. Maps of Japan, including Shiribeshi Province, were updated in the 1870s.

In 1882, Shiribeshi and the other ten provinces of Hokkaido were reorganized. They became parts of three new prefectures: Hakodate Prefecture, Sapporo Prefecture, and Nemuro Prefecture.
