Shirley J. Mitchell (born November 4, 1919 – died November 11, 2013) was an American actress. She was famous for her work in radio, movies, and TV shows.

Shirley Mitchell's Early Life
Shirley Mitchell was born in Toledo, Ohio. Her parents, Sam Mitchell and Mary Ann Daniels, came to America from Russia. They moved to escape the Russian Civil War.
Shirley grew up in Toledo, Ohio, with her younger brother, Dr. Marvin Mitchell.
Shirley Mitchell's Acting Career
Shirley Mitchell started her acting career in Chicago. She appeared on a radio show called The First Nighter Program. She also had small parts in radio soap operas. These included The Story of Mary Marlin and The Road of Life.
After moving to Los Angeles, she acted with famous stars. She worked with Joan Davis and Jack Haley on The Sealtest Village Store. Shirley also played Louella in The Life of Riley. In 1943, she joined Fibber McGee and Molly as Alice Darling. She also appeared in Amos & Andy and The Charlotte Greenwood Show.
Radio Star: Leila Ransom
One of Shirley Mitchell's most well-known radio roles was Leila Ransom. This character was a charming Southern belle. Shirley played Leila on The Great Gildersleeve starting in 1942.
TV Roles: I Love Lucy and More
From 1953 to 1954, Shirley appeared on I Love Lucy. She played Marion Strong in three episodes. Marion was Lucy Ricardo's friend and had a funny laugh. Shirley was the last surviving adult cast member from I Love Lucy.
In the late 1950s, she was on The Jack Benny Program twice. She played Mildred Meyerhauser, a bold character with a strong accent. Her character often caused funny problems in fancy places.
In 1961, she appeared in an episode of The Tab Hunter Show.
Later TV Appearances
In 1962, Shirley played Janet Colton in 13 episodes of Pete and Gladys. She acted alongside Harry Morgan and Cara Williams.
From 1963 to 1965, she was on Perry Mason five times. In 1965, she played Marilyn David, a murder victim's wife. In 1964, she voiced a character who was a murder victim, Elizabeth Bain.
From 1965 to 1967, she played Marge Thornton on Please Don't Eat the Daisies. She also appeared in other 1960s TV shows. This included Petticoat Junction in 1968.
Shirley also did voice-over work. She voiced Laurie Holliday in The Roman Holidays in 1972. In 1977, she appeared in The Feather and Father Gang. In the late 1970s, she was on Three's Company with Don Porter.
Shirley Mitchell's Personal Life
Shirley Mitchell got engaged to Dr. Julian H. Frieden in 1946. They got married on November 23, 1946.
They had two children, a daughter named Brooke and a son named Scott. Shirley and Julian divorced in 1974.
In 1992, she married songwriter Jay Livingston. They stayed married until he passed away in 2001.
Shirley Mitchell died on November 11, 2013. She was 94 years old and passed away from heart failure.
