Shirley Setia is a talented singer and actress from New Zealand. She is well-known for her work in the Indian film and music industries.
Shirley was born in Daman, India. Her family later moved to Auckland, New Zealand. While studying at the University of Auckland, she started uploading cover songs of Hindi film music on YouTube. This made her very popular.
Forbes magazine even called her "Bollywood's Next Big Singing Sensation." Shirley made her acting debut in 2020 with the Hindi film Maska, which was shown on Netflix. She later starred in the big-screen movie Nikamma in 2022. She also appeared in the Telugu film Krishna Vrinda Vihari in the same year.
Early Life and YouTube Start
Shirley Setia grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. She was a student at the University of Auckland. While there, she entered a singing contest held by T-Series.
She recorded her entry video in her bedroom while wearing pyjamas! This fun fact earned her the nickname "Pyjama popstar" from the New Zealand Herald newspaper. Shirley won the contest, which helped kickstart her career.
Becoming a Singing Star
After her win, Shirley started performing in weekly radio shows and local competitions in Auckland. In 2016, she held her first concerts in India, in the cities of Mumbai and Hyderabad.
Forbes magazine wrote an article about her. They highlighted her goals and called her "Bollywood's Next Big Singing Sensation." The Hindustan Times also recognized her as an Indian YouTube sensation. TVNZ even named her one of New Zealand's biggest international artists.
As of September 2023, Shirley has over 3.86 million subscribers on her YouTube channel. Her videos have been watched more than 381 million times! YouTube invited her to perform live at their 'YouTube FanFest' in Mumbai in both 2016 and 2017.
Acting Journey
Shirley Setia began her acting career in 2020 with the film Maska. This movie was released on Netflix.
Her next film was Nikamma, which came out in June 2022. It was a remake of a Telugu film called Middle Class Abbayi. Shirley also made her debut in Telugu films with Krishna Vrinda Vihari, which was released in September 2022.
