The Short Hills Park historic district is a very old and special part of Short Hills. This area is located in Millburn, Essex County, New Jersey. It covers about 1,000 acres (4 square kilometers) and has 125 buildings, mostly homes. This neighborhood was the first part of Short Hills to be built.

What is Short Hills Park?

The Short Hills Park historic district was created by a man named Stewart Hartshorn. He bought 1,550 acres of land in 1877. His big dream was to build an "ideal town." He wanted people to live close to nature and the beautiful countryside.

A Dream Town Comes to Life

Stewart Hartshorn planned the town very carefully. He made sure the streets followed the natural shape of the land. He also routed the streets to save as many trees as possible. This helped keep the area looking natural and green.

Homes and History

The homes in Short Hills Park were built between 1877 and the early 1900s. They show different styles of architecture from that time. Some popular styles include Queen Anne and Shingle. Famous architects like M.H. Baillie Scott helped design some of these buildings.

This special district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980. It was recognized for its important architecture and how the community was planned. The town of Millburn has special rules to protect this historic area. These rules help make sure new buildings fit in with the old ones. In 2015, the average house in this district was worth over $2 million!
