Shubha Tole facts for kids
Shubha Tole, born in August 1967, is an amazing Indian scientist. She is a neuroscientist, which means she studies the brain. Dr. Tole works as a professor and a lead researcher at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai, India. Her main work is learning how the brains of mammals (like humans, dogs, and cats) grow and change over time. In 2014, she won a big award called the Infosys Prize for her important discoveries in life sciences.
Early Life and Education
Shubha Tole was born in August 1967 in India. Her mother, Aruna P. Tole, was an occupational therapist. She helped design special tools and devices for people, especially cancer patients. Dr. Tole's father was the director of an institute called SAMEER. This institute worked with electronics for the Indian government.
Shubha Tole studied life sciences and biochemistry at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai. Later, she went to the California Institute of Technology in the United States. There, she earned her master's and doctoral degrees. After that, Dr. Tole did more research at the University of Chicago.
Research and Career
In 1999, Dr. Tole started her own research team at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai.
Dr. Tole and her team made a very important discovery. They found out how a special gene called LHX2 works. This gene helps control how parts of the brain like the amygdala, cortex, and hippocampus form. These parts are very important for emotions, thinking, and memory.
Her research group also suggested how the neocortex might have developed in mammals. The neocortex is the newest part of the brain. They linked its development to the amygdala, which is a much older brain structure. Dr. Tole's team also found out how two parts of the brain that control behavior like reproduction and aggression develop. These parts are in the accessory olfactory bulb.
Dr. Tole has also been a member of important science groups. One of these is the International Affairs Committee of the American Society for Cell Biology. She is also a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India, and the Indian Academy of Sciences.
Personal Life
Dr. Tole is married to a scientist named Sandip Trivedi. He is a theoretical physicist. They got married in 1989 and have two sons.
Honors and Awards
Dr. Tole has received many awards for her amazing work.
- In 1999, she received the Wellcome Trust Senior International Fellowship.
